Birmingham public realm work in city centre advancing

Extensive public realm works to improve Birmingham city centre started in January 2026 and we take a look at how it is progressing, three months on.

Concrete has been poured and new paving installed over the past month in the current phase of work in Temple Street and New Street, between Apple Store and Victoria Square.

The two-year transformation work aims to enhance the city’s environment and connectivity with higher quality paving, enhanced street lighting and upgraded street furniture.

Central BID supports businesses in the city centre and is keeping them up to date on access changes and road closures throughout the process, along with CPC Civils, which is carrying out the work on behalf of Birmingham City Council.

New granite surfaces are being installed along with improvements to street furniture, lighting and drainage around central Birmingham over six phases.

Areas being improved include New Street, Bennetts Hill, Ethel Street, Temple Street, Lower Temple Street, Eden Place and Chamberlain Passage.
