Black Sabbath rare images displayed on iconic Birmingham pub The Crown

Historic The Crown pub is synonymous with Birmingham’s proud music heritage and now features rarely-seen Black Sabbath photos on its frontage.

Grade II Listed for its historic importance, the venue on the corner of Station Street and Hill Street is where Black Sabbath created their sound, which paved the way for heavy metal.

Though no longer operating as a live venue, it remains a pilgrimage spot for fans, thousands of which will be heading to Birmingham this Summer for a final homecoming gig by Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward at Villa Park.

Central BID Birmingham has helped The Crown’s owner refresh the frontage of the famous landmark by arranging for early photographs of the band to go on display in the venue’s windows.

Heavy metal fans can now take in rarely-seen photos of the band from their early
days of 1968-70 at the ideal spot for selfies. The images were provided by Jim Simpson, who was Black Sabbath’s first manager.

It is just one of the many Black Sabbath hotspots to visit in the city centre this Summer, which feature on this special ‘Summer of Sabbath’ map created by Central BID Birmingham. Read more here and download the map.

It includes where to find a world exclusive Ozzy Osbourne memorabilia exhibition called Working Class Hero, a new huge street art mural to honour the band by renowned artist Mr Murals, an outdoor photography exhibition of their album covers and more.

The map also highlights how to find The Crown, which not only hosted Black Sabbath but also the region’s music stars from Led Zeppelin to UB40.
