Extensive public realm works will start in January to enhance large areas of the city centre.
CPC Civils is working on behalf of Birmingham City Council to install new granite surfaces and improve lighting, drainage and street furniture. Work is expected to take at least 18 months to complete.
Areas being improved include New Street, Bennetts Hill, Ethel Street, Temple Street, Lower Temple Street, Eden Place and Chamberlain Passage.
Central BID’s team will be at hand to support businesses throughout the work, which takes place over six phases, along with keep them updated throughout the process.
Steve Hewlett, Central BID manager, said: “The BID team will be working with all the members to ensure it is business as usual in the city centre.
“The Business Support Officers are here to help, such as assisting with access issues, and will be super supportive while work takes place from January 2026.”
Birmingham City Council said pedestrianised areas would make the city centre “safer and attractive” for cyclists, residents, visitors and businesses. Restricting vehicles also aims to “help improve the overall air quality” in the long term.
“These works will involve small teams of highly skilled operatives removing the existing paving, upgrading the drainage system and sub-base and then installing new paving across all these areas,” said a Council spokesperson.
Work will initially start on January 5 focusing on refurbishment of Victoria Square steps, New Street from KFC and Nando’s down to the Apple Store and Watches of Switzerland, and Temple Street by Flight Club, Fumo and The Ivy.
Access to some areas will be temporarily redirected with traffic management in place.
